Uzbekistan's ranking in the Global Philanthropy Index has almost doubled

In 2020, Uzbekistan rose from 53rd to 29th place in the World Giving Index. Amid the pandemic, instead of the countries that used to be in the top ten (USA, UK, Ireland, Canada, Netherlands), Indonesia, Kenya, and Nigeria took the top positions. Experts attribute this to the worsening situation of the poor, as well as the activation of civil society and volunteer movement.

In 2020, Uzbekistan has risen from 53rd place in 2018 to 29th place out of 114 countries in the World Giving Index, which was presented by CAF (Charities Aid Foundation). This was reported to Gazeta.uz by the press service of the Institute of Forecasting and Macroeconomic Research.
The country's ranking depends on the average value of three indicators:
Monetary donations to charities;
Providing assistance to people in need;
Working as a volunteer.
Uzbekistan ranked 18th (46%) in donations to charities in 2020, 58th in the number of people helping others directly (57% of people), and 62nd in helping as a volunteer (16%).
The 2020 world ranking was topped by Indonesia. Kenya ranked second and Nigeria third. Experts attribute the growth of charity in these countries to the deterioration of the poor, as well as the activation of civil society and volunteer movement.
In the conditions of pandemic, instead of the countries that used to be in the top 10 (the USA, Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, and the Netherlands), the top positions were taken by the states that have never been in the top 10 before.
The last place (114) in the ranking is occupied by Japan. The experts explained theposition of Japan by the peculiarities of local culture, the high level of state care to the needy and the complicated rules of charity in the country.
France (106th), Kazakhstan (98th), Turkey (78th), Germany (85th) and Russia (67th) also ranked low.
